Issue Summary: The High Cost of Healthcare in the United States

According to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the United States spent $4.5 trillion on healthcare in 2022.

You could think of that as a $13,493 per-person total—though the number takes into account a variety of spenders, including the government, households, private businesses, and others.

This summer, intern Elaine Chen took a look at some of the factors influencing—and implications of—the high cost of healthcare for individual, organizational, and government entities in the United States.

Decency LLC’s issue summary on healthcare spending is part of ongoing efforts to promote thorough consideration and discussion of nuanced issues that potentially affect large numbers of patients in the healthcare system.
