This is not a law firm, a healthcare provider, or a patient advocacy organization.
What is Decency LLC?
Decency takes its cues from think tanks, human rights advocates, and other civil society organizations when identifying room for improvement in healthcare. Rather than focusing on one issue or stakeholder, we consider the views and needs of multiple participants in the healthcare system.
Whether you’re a doctor, a patient, a caregiver, a trainee, let’s make sure you’re treated decently in that role.
For-Profit in Name, Non-Profit by Nature
Since its founding in 2022, Decency has reinvested or donated more than 98% of its income every year, achieving 100% reinvestment and donation as of 2023.
Decency is not a non-profit organization, but no part of the funding it receives benefits an owner or shareholder personally. All funds are directed to operating costs, summer hiring, and micro-gifts around $50 to causes aligned with Decency’s mission.
Our origin: What makes a “decent” healthcare system?
In 2016, Decency’s founder embarked on a career change from patent law practice to healthcare.
She knew she wanted to set people free from their prisons, but she felt more called or better equipped to focus on the internal ones (e.g., physical or psychiatric diseases) than the external ones (a traditional concern of practicing lawyers).
Ironically, through time spent over the following years in classes, laboratories, and clinical settings interacting with consumers of healthcare services, it soon became clear that many of the prisons we think of as internal are actually very much external.
It also became clear that much of the healthcare field and industry were not immune to the same flawed original assumption: that turning inward and focusing first and foremost on studying a population’s DNA will create the healthiest society.
Ultimately, while it may feel more efficient to turn inward to look for answers, neglecting the external leads to incomplete and unsustainable solutions.
With that in mind, the goal of initiatives like TIA Inc., a 2018-2022 non-profit effort, was to give the internal prisons due focus—without neglecting the external ones. Decency carries on this mission today.
